The Pregnancy Questionnaire

PKP-Questionnaire1-22August2015

I didn’t have an active blog when I was pregnant, so I never got to fill out this monthly pregnancy questionnaire. But here is an edited/condensed version for all nine months! I’d love to post this monthly for my future pregnancies.

I’m also sharing some fun photos from this time of my life!

Maternity clothes? I lived in maternity clothes from about three months on. I loved my pregnancy jeans from Old Navy and my pretty tops and dresses from Motherhood Maternity. They also had clothes that fit my plus-size body!

Stretch marks? Yes, but not until after he was born and my stomach shrunk back down.

Sleep: Only possible with my Snoogle, the greatest invention ever! Joshua bought this for me early on when my back started to hurt after standing for long periods of time. It’s this S-shaped body pillow that you can use in all different positions to help you sleep comfortably. It’s the best pregnancy essential!

PKP-Questionnaire3-22August2015

Best moment: Definitely finding out the gender. Joshua wanted a boy so badly, and I was so thrilled to see his reaction when we found out it would be a little boy!

Telling family and friends: We told my immediate family in person, Josh’s immediate family on the phone, and the rest of the world that wasn’t in our pregnancy announcement video found out on Facebook!

PKP-Questionnaire5-22August2015

Movement: Baby boy was tiny, so I couldn’t feel him moving until later in my pregnancy as he grew bigger. I loved feeling him kick, and he was almost always in the same position with his head down. He also had the hiccups quite a bit and it was so cool to feel him hiccup during the day.

Food cravings: All summer long, I craved peach things. Peach gummies, peach tea, peach ice cream, peach everything. Then in the fall, I craved everything pumpkin. Pumpkin coffee, pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin pasta, pumpkin chicken, pumpkin enchiladas, you name it! I was obsessed.

PKP-Questionnaire4-22August2015

Anything making you queasy or sick? Nope. Not at all, the whole 9 months.

When did you start to show? I didn’t start to show until around 16 weeks. I didn’t start taking weekly/monthly photos until 22 weeks, around when my body really started to change.

PKP-Questionnaire8-22August2015

Weight gain: I gained around 20 pounds, which was right in line with what the doctors ordered based on my pre-pregnancy weight.

Labor Signs: Since I ended up being induced, I didn’t feel any labor signs until my water broke in the hospital and the contractions started!

Belly button in or out? Always an innie.

PKP-Questionnaire6-22August2015

Wedding rings on or off? Always on.

Happy or moody most of the time? So freaking happy.

Pregnancy Wisdom: Invest in something to help you sleep well (Snoogle), something to help you dress well (maternity clothes), and something to help you record the journey (weekly photos, a blog, a pregnancy book).

Milestones: Making it to term at 37 weeks (and delivering 4 days later!)

Gender Reveal: #TeamPink or #TeamBlue?

We were so excited to find out the gender of our sweet little baby that we couldn’t wait until the 16 week anatomy appointment! We booked an ultrasound package at with a 4D ultrasound center that included a recorded DVD of the entire ultrasound, 10–4×6 color prints, baby’s heartbeat recorded, and the gender determination. We also elected to purchase an adorable teddy bear that the recorded heartbeat was placed into, so that when you squeeze it you can hear baby’s heart. So special!

It was really a wonderful experience! I’d recommend it to anyone who just can’t wait, like us, or who just wants some more time seeing their baby on the screen. At doctor’s offices, you’re often rushed in and out for a quick scan just to make sure everything is healthy. But at a specialty place like this, the whole purpose is just to see your baby and spend more time “together.” The place we chose had a big, comfy, leather reclining chair for me to sink back into. I didn’t want to leave! The images were on a giant flat screen TV in front of us, so everything was very clear and easy to see.

The morning of our appointment, Josh and I decided to get a little festive. We dressed in our pink and blue and went to our favorite place on the island for breakfast. That’s when I came up with the idea to do a #TeamPink or #TeamBlue post for our family and friends to guess. (When you live so far from everyone you love, you have to get creative to keep everyone involved and stay in touch!)

Joshua really, really, really wanted a baby boy first. Honestly, I wanted both a boy and a girl, but the order didn’t matter to me. Girl or boy, I was ecstatic and couldn’t wait to find out! But since I’ve always wanted a little girl, I wore my pink.

It took a little time to see it on the screen, but as you already know, it’s a boy!

Immediately after our appointment, we went shopping for our baby boy! We got the most adorable sleepers and outfits and it was such a special time together! We lined them up on the back fence when we got home for our “It’s a boy!” announcement. I changed into my blue pants (because… that’ s just me) and voila! We shared the photo with everyone and felt closer despite being so far apart. Such a wonderful day!

Our Pregnancy Announcement

Joshua and I wanted to announce our pregnancy in a special way, so we videoed the reactions of our family and close friends as we “casually” sprung the news on them. Our little surprise was a big surprise to everyone else, too! This video makes me so happy. It was fun to put together to use as our “public” announcement on social media!

We were already planning a trip home to New York from North Carolina at the end of March into early April, which just so happened to be the week of both my parents’ birthdays. I told them by writing in both their cards, “P.S. Your first grandchild is the size of a blueberry. Congratulations!”

Everyone else’s reactions were pretty epic, too. My cousin Amanda at the hair salon (I told her I was taking her photo as I turned on the video camera and told her the news); my cousin Melissa with the salt shaker (priceless!); my Dad’s double take; Josh’s stepmom’s squeal; my best friend Sue’s “Oh. Em. Gee.”; Josh’s brother DJ’s “What?!” and “My mind is blown right now!” My best friend Nikki was the first of my friends to know, and she surprised us with a Build-A-Bear for baby! Our family is all across the country, so we did the best we could with FaceTime and phone calls!

At the time we posted the video, my due date was November 26th but was soon after changed to November 27th — Thanksgiving Day!

Finding Out We Were Expecting

The day I found out I was pregnant was Monday, March 17th, 2014 — St. Patrick’s Day — what luck! Joshua and I were not trying to get pregnant at the time. We wanted to, but we had some issues we had wanted to take care of first and planned to start trying later that year — more on that soon. Every year since we were married, we would start off the year saying “Let’s start trying for a baby this fall,” and then when fall would come, “Let’s wait until next year.” I had actually just started tracking my cycle and taking ovulation tests to get a better sense of when would be the best time to start trying. So it was on our radar, and we were always so excited to grow our family, it just happened a little sooner than we were expecting.

The Saturday before St. Patrick’s day, we were out bar hopping and celebrating the holiday with our friends. Little did I know, that would be my last Blue Moon for a REALLY long time! Joshua had the morning off on Monday, and he was out working in the garage while I was upstairs working in my office. My iPhone buzzed with a notification — my period tracking app — telling me I was 9 days late.

“Nine days late?” I thought to myself. I felt butterflies in my stomach. I felt panic. I felt confused. “Nine days late? Really?” I ran down to the garage and told Josh I was headed to CVS to pick up a pregnancy test, #NoBigDeal. “I’m sure it’s just my cycle being weird again, but I’ll just double check. Be back in a flash!” He looked a little miffed but other than that, was totally calm. I felt so sure I wasn’t pregnant that I bought the cheapest CVS brand test they had.

I got home. I peed. I waited. And there it was… two blue lines. “Oh my god. Oh my god? Oh my god!” I ran back down to the garage. “Babe…”

PKP-PregnancyAnnouncement1-21August2015

I think his reply was a mix of excited cussing and “Are you serious?” and nervous cussing. Then of course, shock and surprise. And maybe a few more “Are you serious?” questions thrown in there.

I ran back to CVS to get a two more tests. One for right away, one for first thing the next morning (obviously the most expensive tests I could pick up after running back to CVS to make sure it wasn’t a generic test fluke, ha!). The second test from the twin pack as well as the third all confirmed that yes, yes! I was pregnant. We called my doctor and were able to make an appointment for my first ultrasound at what we assumed would be the 8 week mark, but it turned out I was only 7 weeks along at my first ultrasound. I was barely 4 weeks pregnant when finding out.

And so began My Pregnancy Story!

Because Mommy Needs an Outlet

PKP-MommyOutlet-30Dec2014

Joshua gave me his blessing to start a family blog — because he’s an awesome husband — and because he knows I love to write, and I need some type of creative outlet to get by! So I figured, what better way than to revive our old wedding website, thepkposse.com? And here we are. A big, blank canvas for me to share our family updates, home projects, and excess of photos with our friends, relatives, and everyone else.

As a military family, Josh’s job has us living far away from “home.” Even though “home” is a different place for both of us, and we’ve both called multiple places home in our lifetime, for the most part when I tell Josh I want to visit home, he knows I’m referring to Upstate New York. The Lake George area, to be more specific! It’s become home to him as well, since that’s where we were married 4 years ago this year. Four years! Time really does fly.

We’re far away from family, and with a career as a social media strategist, there is only so much Facebook I can handle. I’d like to use this space to share family updates and adventures, home projects and decor, raising Preston Kade — and Ladybug — and all the joys and laughs in this new journey of parenthood for Joshua and I. So this is where it’s at. Us, you, and this new blog. I’ll probably be writing late at night after the house is quiet and everyone is asleep, but we’ll see how it goes. In the meantime, if there is anything you’d like to hear about, let us know!

xo,
Dani
